Digital Inclusion Officer Shaun to zipslide the Clyde with his mum, Thelma

A mother and son duo are taking to the skies in aid of Glasgow’s Golden Generation in September following multi-generational support from the charity.

Shaun and Thelma Leinster are taking part in a sponsored zipline across the Clyde in a bid to raise funds for the Glasgow older people’s charity.

The pair have been involved with GGG for over a year, with Shaun working as a Digital Inclusion Officer for the charity and Thelma taking part in digital classes alongside her mother-in-law, Janet.

Janet said,

“I have loved attending the Digital Café at GGG’s David Cargill Day Centre. I’ve learned how to use my tablet and phone which means I don’t need to phone my family to help me out with them!

“I’ve also met some lovely people – when the class hasn’t been on over the holidays a few of us have met up for coffee instead which is great.”

Shaun added,

“When I joined the charity, GGG had recently finished a programme of distributing hundreds of devices to older adults in Glasgow.

“My role specifically looks at ensuring older adults who have either received tablets from us, or have their own, are getting the most out of them.

“Working with such a fantastic charity is really enjoyable so I’m delighted to be fundraising for GGG to ensure we can continue supporting older adults in the city.

”Every day I see first-hand the difference makes to GGG and it’s a bonus that the charity supports both my Mum and my Grandma.”

Mum, Thelma said,

“I’m taking part for two reasons – firstly both my mother-in-law and I have benefitted from the charity’s digital classes, but the zipline is also a fun thing to do together with my son.

“I’m a bit nervous, but I can’t wait!”

Glasgow’s Golden Generation has been supporting older adults in Glasgow since 1948 and provides 6 key services; day care centres, weekly social clubs, befriending, welfare advice, a careline and of course the digital service.

Each year GGG supports thousands of older Glaswegians and has managed to get over 200 over 55s online since launching their digital service back in 2020 in response to the pandemic.

There are still places available for the zipline taking place at the Riverside Museum on Saturday 17 September 2022. Reserving your place costs £30 and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £150 in advance of the event. All funds raised will support Glasgow’s Golden Generation, Glasgow’s charity for older adults. Call 0141 221 9924 or visit www.glasgowgg.org.uk/events to secure your place today.
